MLA Essay Format

The Modern Language Association was founded in 1883. They are the ones who developed the MLA formatting commonly used today. This particular format is often the standard used by literature and language scholars. Anytime you are asked to write an essay based on MLA formatting requirements, you should use the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers.Since you can get the handbook almost anywhere, you shouldn’t have a problem picking it up. There is plenty of information online as well about the writing principles of MLA formatting.

To help make sure you know what you need to do to format your paper properly, follow these simple and easy to understand guidelines below.

You should also print your essay on standard white 8.5 x 11-inch paper. Avoid colors or other weird paper sizes and stick with the standard paper.

Title Page

Unless your instructor tells you differently, you do not need to include a title page with your essay.

When drafting an MLA essay, you should use standard 12 pt. font. Even though there aren’t any specific MLA essay formats in terms of what font to use, you should stick with a standard Times New Roman to be safe. Other alternatives are Courier New, Georgia and Arial. The key is choosing a font that is easy to read and doesn’t cause someone to strain their eyes in an attempt to make out the words and letters.

When it comes to MLA formatting, there are a few simple rules you need to follow. Margins should be one-inch on all sides. Use a standard 0.5-inch margin from the top of the page to your name. Your title should be centered. Refrain from using any type of italics in the title of your paper. When you have a quote that is longer than four lines in length, you should indent the paragraph by one-inch. Avoid using any quotation marks or changing the right margin. The only thing that should change is the left margin to indent the paragraph for the quote.

Whenever writing an MLA essay, you should number your pages consecutively using Arabic numerals (i.e. 1, 2, 3, etc.). While some instructors want a number on the first page, others don’t. You need to ask them what their individual specifications are in terms of what they want you to do. You should place the page number in the upper right corner of each page.

MLA essay format calls for double spacing throughout the paper. Oftentimes, people put two spaces after periods, commas and so on. However, that isn’t proper MLA formatting. You should only have one space after any punctuation marks.

All paragraphs should be indented by 0.5-inches. For MLA essay format, the best way to approach indentations is to press the TAB key once instead of pressing the spacebar five times. This will ensure uniformity in your paper throughout.

All headings should be properly capitalized just like you would capitalize the words for the title of your paper. Headings should also be centered. Refrain from bolding, underlining or italicizing your headlines. Plain font is preferred.

MLA referencing is often referred to as an author-page style. Whenever you have any MLA references, you should always include the author’s last name and the page where you got the quote. When doing any citations within the body of the text, it should look like this (Name, 1).

The values represent the maximum load amount that can be exerted on materials without causing it to become deformed (Ashby 23). Even though the climate is changing, biologists don’t agree that it is going to end up threatening the plants and animals with extinction (Stampf & Traufetter 132).

MLA Referencing

A references page is included at the end of your research paper. Your references page shouldn’t start in the middle of a page. It should always begin on a new page. At the center of the page, you should include the title ‘Works Cited’. All citations should be double spaced. A hanging indent is often needed for all references. To do so, you simply indent the second and any additional lines of text by 0.5-inches. This helps to identify where a new citation starts and the previous one ends as well.
